The Herdade da Aroeira Golf Resort is located 600 metres (656 yards) from the beach on the Caparica Coast and only 25 km (15 miles) from Lisbon. The golf resort consists of some 350 hectares (865 acres) of beautiful pine forest, lakes and two 18-hole championship golf courses. There's also a golf school with 2 driving ranges and 2 putting greens, and a friendly clubhouse with excellent restaurant, bar and golf shop. The golf shop sells a range golfing equipment through the Nevada Bob’s Golf franchise chain. Other facilities include a swimming pool, tennis courts, children’s playground and a shopping mall. There are also plans to build a luxury 5 star hotel to compliment the existing villas and apartments on the complex.
Aroeira I was the first for the two golf courses to be built. It was designed by Frank Pennink and opened in 1973. Aroeira I is reputably one of the best golf courses in Europe and has hosted the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997 and a number of Ladies Opens.
Aroeira II was designed by Donald Steel and opened in 2000. Aroeira II is also an 18-hole championship golf course and was designed for future Portuguese Opens. Its long fairways and wide greens winding round five lakes amongst the densely wooded surroundings, makes the Aroeira II golf course popular with all levels of Golfers. For a number of years, Aroeira II has hosted the Qualifying School of Ladies European Tour and several Portuguese Ladies Opens.
